Stephen MacLean, MD.

PRODUCER, CO-OWNER - DREAMFRONT ENTERTAINMENT INC.

Stephen MacLean has a unique background. In addition to his MD degree, he has written over forty freelance articles and published numerous photographs for a national newspaper called the “Medical Post” among others. He has also worked as a medical story consultant for several published authors with a combined print run of over a million.

In 2006, he directed and executive produced a short film called A Thin Dry Roar.  This screened at the Montreal World and Atlantic Film festivals among others. Following its screening at the 2007 AFF, the project was picked up for worldwide distribution by Ouat Media out of Toronto, and is slated to air on the Movieola channel.

In 2007, he co-produced an ambitious feature-length Sci-Fi thriller called Waiting for the Apocalypse.  Principal photography spanned over four months, and the project is in post-production.

He then joined up with and now co-owns Dream Front Entertainment with Benjamin Stevens. Through the company, Stephen produced and wrote Titanic’s Unknown Child, an emotional documentary about efforts to identify the youngest body recovered after the sinking of the Titanic.  It premiered February 15th on CBC’s Land and Sea and aired again in April and August of this year.

In addition to other shorts, he has produced and written two sexy and risqué book trailers called The Mistress Diaries and In My Wildest Fantasies.  These have appeared on Romance Novel TV in addition to several popular websites including USA’s Border’s Books.

He is very excited about two feature projects in development: one is the adaptation of the 2003 Rita Award nominated novel Adam’s Promise, written by USA Today best-selling author Julianne MacLean. The romantic story is set on the breathtaking plains of colonial-era Nova Scotia/New Brunswick.   Stephen is producer and screenwriter, with Benjamin Stevens as director and co-writer.  Another feature project that is creating a lot of buzz is their supernatural thriller Unwritten. This exciting thriller is garnering attention from Canadian and International distributors, broadcasters and producers.  Karen Wentzell (of Trailer Park Boys fame) has joined forces with Ben and Steve in a producer capacity on both of these features.

Stephen is a recent recipient of the Atlantic Filmmaker’s Cooperative 2009 “open grant”.  He has written and will produce a disturbing short film called The Silent Moon about a young girl who communicates with her dead Grandfather.  With Benjamin Stevens as director, and Jeff Wheaton as DOP, the project is sure to turn heads… perhaps literally.  It was accepted into Film5’s Phase 1 program, and production on 35mm film is anticipated for the Spring of 2010.

Other projects in the pipes include joining forces with Red Star Films and writer/producer Fay Maddison on an upcoming fairy tale driven feature called Natasha’s Wood.   A short teaser for this project was green lit and sponsored by Unicef.  Filmed in HD with the Red camera, it was shot in Point Pleasant Park on October 17th.  Post-production CG effects are bound to be impressive with the help of Jacob Owens and the talented group at Halifax’s Egg Films.

Stephen and Dream Front are also extremely proud of their 2009 short film New Blood.  Recipient of The Coast’s newspaper silver medal for Halifax’s best short of 2008/2009 competition, this ghostly short has a definite Twilight influence. Also filmed using Red cam’s HD technology, it was finished on 35mm film for projection on the big screen.  It made its International premiere at the Atlantic Film Festival to rave reviews on September 22 at the CBC Shorts Gala.  A TV series spin-off from the short called Raising Faith is currently in development.
